Define conscious, preconscious, nonconscious, and unconscious thought and provide examples of thoughts that might have been in each level of consciousness prior to being asked this question

What will be an ideal response?

The student should define conscious thoughts as being things they are currently aware of (like the words in this question). Preconscious thoughts are memories accessed after something calls attention to them (like what you had for dinner last night). Nonconscious thoughts are things in our current environment that we "pick up" without them being consciously attended to (like the sound of the fan in the classroom). Unconscious thoughts include threatening memories and thoughts blocked from conscious thought (like the belief that one's mother is sexy).
