Describe the difference between and antalgic and ataxic gait
What will be an ideal response?
An antalgic gait is any kind of gait dysfunction that occurs as a self-protective measure to avoid a painful range of motion. An ataxic gait is a gait dysfunction that occurs when there has been damage to the cerebellum, which can lead to hypotonia (low muscle tone) and decreased muscle strength or hypertonic muscles and spasticity. An antalgic gait is characterized by a shortened stance phase while an ataxic gait is characterized by difficulty with motor control and a widened stance to compensate for balance problems.
