Manuscript speeches can fail to engage the audience and can limit eye contact, but they
help prevent misspeaking when it's important not to deviate from exact wording. Memorized
speeches can also fail to engage, and they can be challenging for speakers to learn; they are
good for those who must deliver the same speech repeatedly. Impromptu speeches do not allow
for advance preparation, so they require thinking on one's feet to develop an introduction, body,
transitions, and conclusion. Impromptu speeches are not polished, but they are necessary when
someone is called upon to speak. Extemporaneous speeches, the most common and most
preferred type, require research, organization, and practice. Although conversational quality
and lack of memorization can pose challenges, extemporaneous speeches allow for audience
adaptation.
