Fracking and the Keystone Pipeline are two controversial components in the debate over environmental policy. What are these things are why are they so controversial?

What will be an ideal response?

Fracking: The technology used to extract the gas, hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” has become highly controversial. It involves injecting a chemical cocktail into the ground to break up rock and extract oil or gas. Environmental groups contend the potential threat to contaminating groundwater isn’t worth the risk. Some also worry it would emit more of the greenhouse gases blamed for global warming than the coal and oil it is intended to replace.
The Keystone Pipeline: The Keystone XL Pipeline became one of the most volatile environmental controversies of 2012. The pipeline is a 1,700-mile, $7 billion project that would bring 700,000 barrels of carbon-heavy tar sands oil per day from Alberta, Canada, to refineries on the U.S. Gulf Coast. It is very controversial due to the cost involved and the environmental impact it may have. Proponents of renewable energy argue that funds should be used to invest in renewable sources, not oil.
