denial: "No, not me!" stage, occurs when person cannot accept reality of death or feels loved ones cannot accept the truth; anger: occurs when person is no longer able to deny death and strikes out at anyone who comes in contact with them; bargaining: occurs when person accepts death but wants more time to live, frequently turns to religion and spiritual beliefs; depression: occurs when person realizes that death will come soon and goals will not be completed; acceptance: occurs when person accepts fact that death will occur, tries to complete unfinished business and help those around him or her deal with death
