Explain the difference between somatic symptom and dissociative disorders. Why are these disorders commonly considered at the same time?
What will be an ideal response?
Somatic symptom disorders are characterized by physical complaints, thought to be manifestations of some psychological problem. In contrast, dissociative disorders involve some separation of the functioning of consciousness, memory, identity, or perception. Again, the underlying cause for the observed distortions is some psychological abnormality. Both were once classified as neuroses and are thought to have anxiety as their underlying cause.
