Compare and contrast the ideas of stereotype and prejudice. Give an example of a current event that indicates these issues
Answer:
Stereotypes as broad generalizations about an entire class of objects or people, based on some knowledge of some aspects of some members of the class (Brislin, 2000; Stephan & Stephan, 1992). When you stereotype computer programmers as smart but socially inept, you likely are basing your beliefs on your interactions with a few programmersâ€"or perhaps on no interactions at all. If you develop a stereotype, it tends to influence what you expect from the stereotyped group. Prejudice occurs when people experience aversive or negative feelings toward a group as a whole or toward an individual because she or he belongs to a group (Rothenberg, 1992). People can experience prejudice against a person or group because of his or her physical characteristics, perceived ethnicity, age, national origin, religious practices, and a number of other identity categories.
