Explain the concept of "cross-referencing" patients in the MPI or patient list. Give an example.

What will be an ideal response?

Answers will vary. Jane Marie Anderson has been a patient of Dr. Rudolph for 25 years. She recently married, and is now Jane Marie Hendershot. She is keeping her medical insurance through her employer and uses her maiden name professionally, so she has chosen to stay Jane Marie Anderson in the office. The registration staff has cross-referenced Jane Marie Anderson and Jane Marie Hendershot, however, so that if she should decide to adopt Hendershot as her legal last name, she does not end up with two different health records in that office.
