New technology and market forces continue to transform the movie industry. Home video had become a driving force, with revenues from rentals and direct sales of videos and DVDs outstripping box office receipts two to one, while at the same time, the cost of producing major films skyrocketed as producers raced to outdo each other with spectacular computer-generated special effects. Moviemaking at the major studios began to gravitate more toward genres (e.g., science fiction, action-adventure) that could translate and export well across cultures. Computer technology for editing and high quality, low-cost digital cameras drove down the cost of producing "small" or indie films and offered the prospect of a renaissance in filmmaking apart from the financial pressures of the blockbuster mentality that gripped Hollywood.
