Which is a benefit of using omentum as a graft?

a. Will resorb into tissue when grafted
b. Does not usually require a split-thickness skin graft
c. Has very few blood vessels for anastomosis
d. Helps localize and control infection

ANS: D
A free graft of omentum can be used to provide contour in a soft tissue defect in the face or neck, to resurface an area such as the scalp, to provide vascular support for bone and skin grafts around prosthetic materials, and to control wound infection, such as in the chest wall. Omentum will localize inflammation and wall off infection. It will not resorb when grafted. Omentum resected from the peritoneal cavity can be transplanted to an avascular area if sufficient blood vessels are available for microvascular anastomoses to the gastroepiploic artery and vein in the graft. Split-thickness skin grafts cover the omental graft.
