Why was the X Window interface developed?

What will be an ideal response?

Because the average user can't fully appreciate the power of Linux from working just at the command line, developing a more user-friendly environment was important. X Window was developed to unleash the graphical capability of Linux and set a protocol for creating and manipulating graphical elements (such as windows, buttons, icons, and so on) on a computer screen. With this system, you can run multiple graphics applications simultaneously.
