What is ethos and why is ethos important in persuasive speaking?

Ethos is credibility. In the case of persuasive speaking, a speaker must establish ethos in order for audience members to believe that the presentation is accurate. If a speaker damages his/her ethos, his/her persuasive power is usually diminished.
