Patients with acute myelomonocytic leukemia are at higher risk of infection compared with individuals with acute myelocytic leukemia with differentiation

Explain why there is a higher risk of infection in patients diagnosed with acute myelomonocytic leukemia.

What will be an ideal response?

Answer: In patients diagnosed with acute myelomonocytic leukemia, the production of mature monocytes and neutrophils is severely limited (both cell types function to eliminate bacteria). In acute myelocytic leukemia with differentiation, the neutrophil lineage is severely compromised, but there is at least some production of normal monocytes to elicit an antibacterial innate immune response.
