Why is it important that speakers present on topics about which they feel deeply passionate? Discuss this question as it relates to each of the 5 sections of Chapter 11

What will be an ideal response?

The best answers will engage each Learning Objective:
1. 11.1 (Explain the ethical issues involved in delivering your speech) by discussing that ethical communication requires respect for oneself and one's audience, and the passionate speaker will likely emphasize this respect better than will the unenthused orator.
2. 11.2 (Describe the basic principles of effective delivery) by discussing the different ways in which passion manifests through delivery, including but not limited to: pitch, volume, rate, gestures, facial expressions, and eye contact. Outstanding answers will also acknowledge that a passionate "performance" is no substitute for true passion through ethical delivery.
3. 11.3 (Explain the advantages of delivering your speech extemporaneously) by discussing the text's assertion that extemporaneous speech is easiest when the speaker is passionate about and highly informed on the topic under consideration.
4. 11.4 (Compare and contrast different styles of delivery, listing the strengths and weaknesses of each), briefly, by discussing the ways that passion for one's topic can facilitate good delivery in one of the other three delivery styles (that is, impromptu, manuscript, and memorization). Outstanding answers might cite specific examples, such as "A speaker passionate about her or his topic who chooses to memorize the speech fully may be less likely to sound as if s/he is on ‘auto-pilot.'" Answers might also discuss that speakers who are unenthused about their speech topic may choose to use one of the three less-recommended speaking styles, since the extemporaneous style takes significant effort to achieve.
5. 11.5 (Anticipate audience questions and explain appropriate ways of responding to them) by explaining that, as we learned in the previous Learning Objectives, the passionate speaker is likely to have done a lot of work to prepare and is therefore able to engage in a question-and-answer session with increased preparedness and poise. Outstanding answers might remark that passionate speakers must take care to listen carefully to audience critiques of their position rather than respond defensively or with an interruption.
