Remote relationships = the most common reason being geographical distance, although one certainly should recognize that this type of relationship can also result from parental conflicts with the grandparents or conflict between grandparents and grandchildren. Companionate relationships = frequent contact and interaction; e.g., regular visits or sleepovers. Involved relationships = direct involvement with the everyday care of grandchildren; e.g., the grandparent picks the children up from school or provides day care for working parents.
