What is the purpose of "perinatal screening"? What are some examples of common perinatal
screening inventories? What are some drawbacks to using these instruments for research
purposes?
What will be an ideal response?
The perinatal period represents the time shortly before and after delivery. Perinatal
screening instruments are used to identify infants that may be at risk for medical or
developmental problems. These instruments would include Apgar scores, the Postnatal
Complications Scale, and Optimal Obstetric Conditions Scale. These instruments may
identify potential prenatal problems (e.g., maternal drug use), birth complications, as
well as neonatal problems (e.g., low birth weight). While these instruments are good at
identifying infants at immediate risk, they should not be used to make long range
predictions.
