Answer:
The manager presents the problem and encourages the group to engage in a problem-solving process similar to consensus decision-making processes. When contrary viewpoints are expressed, he attempts to reconcile them with the viewpoints expressed by the majority. When the group appears to have come to a general agreement on how to resolve the problem, the manager summarizes the group decision by making a statement, such as, "If I understand correctly, you agree that we should do x." The group then has the chance to continue to refine this statement until the manager is assured that he has properly captured their proposed resolution.
Upon considering the group's suggestions, the manager states the decision that he is inclined to make and that he believes comes closest to what the group has suggested. He further explains the basis for his decision and why he believes it is the best decision even if it does not satisfy all the interests expressed by the group. He then polls each group member to determine if he or she can support the decision. Upon obtaining support of all or most group members, he implements the decision.
