Briefly describe three of the four listening styles and how they are used. Which one do you use most frequently and why?

What will be an ideal response?

Students will describe three of the following four listening styles:
One uses an action-oriented listening style when focusing on the information of a message rather than the delivery with the desire to use the information. For example, one might use action-oriented listening to listen to his/her boss for directions on how to proceed with a project.

Content-oriented listening reflects an interest in detailed and complex information, simply for the content itself, preferring debate or argument over simpler speech. One might use content-oriented listening when watching political debates over important issues prior to an election.

People-oriented listening is associated with friendly, open communication and an interest in establishing ties with others. For example, one might use a people-oriented listening style when listening to a friend who is going through a romantic breakup and needs support.

With time-oriented listening, individuals don't want to waste time on complex details of information and just want the highlights, seeking only the most important information quickly delivered. For example, an emergency medical unit might want just the most important facts when arriving at the scene of a serious accident.

Sample student application answer: Personally, I use an action-oriented listening style the most right now as a student because I am taking direction from my teachers/boss regularly and I listen for the information that I need to know to do well at school/work.
