Rewiring is a small-world network creation strategy where one end of an already existing link of a network is removed and connected to another distant node in the network. However, rewiring strategy imposes some challenges in the context of wireless multi-hop relaying net- works. Identify and list the challenges faced in link rewiring in a WMN which is a type of multi-hop relying networks.

What will be an ideal response?

Rewiring is one of the techniques to realize small-world networks where an existing link is removed from one of the nodes in a network and then the removed side is connected to other
distant node. However, realizing rewiring is very challenging when wireless multi-hop relaying
networks, such as wireless mesh networks, are concerned for the following reasons (but not
limited to):

In wireless multi-hop relaying networks, communications are carried out by omnidi-
rectional antennas. However, in rewiring, the connection has to be established with
long-distant node which is very difficult with such omnidirectional antennas.

Moreover, enhancing the communication range of an omnidirectional antenna also brings
down the signal-to-interference plus noise ratio to a greater extent by introducing severe
interference in the network.

Rewiring can only be partially realized by directional antenna in multi-hop wireless
communication networks setting. To do that the directional antenna beam should be
steered to an intended direction, with the help of certain electronic motor, to rewire an
existing link. However, beam steering in a real-time situation is very critical and also
may result in severe interference.

Further, power control is also very critical in wireless environment and rewiring needs
acute power control for the radiation beam in order to create distant connection in the
network.
