Even if the forensics process is properly defined and the tool set is correct, the workforce still has to be capable of performing all of the requisite forensic tasks. The forensics process requires its own set of formal training procedures to ensure that the workforce is capable of performing all necessary duties. An important aspect of that requirement is that most forensics examinations are done by a third party. These third-party requirements are likely to have conditions built into them that might not be familiar to the forensics staff.

Consequently, there have to be provisions built into any workforce capability development plan to ensure that the particular workers on a given project are sufficiently trained and knowledgeable to meet the specific requirements of that project.

Moreover, as forensics investigations progress, it is frequently necessary to coordinate, interface with, or work under the direction of other appropriate organizational entities, such as corporate legal counsel or even the physical security operation. That requirement for cooperation can also include external governmental entities at the local, state, national, and even international level. Therefore, it is important to build situational awareness and the ability to facilitate inter-group work into the skill set for forensics professionals. These abilities can be ensured by targeted training and awareness programs.
