Discuss some of the progress that has been made in advancing gay rights. Why have these advances come about now? Wheredo federal and state laws stand on gay marriage?
What will be an ideal response?
An ideal response will:
1, Discuss laws that protect gays against some forms of discrimination, such as the repeal of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy. Discuss Supreme Court rules that decriminalized gay sex, such as Lawrence v.Texas.
2, Note that attitudes toward homosexuals have become more positive, as today few Americans oppose equal employment opportunities for gays, and most think gay and lesbian relationships are acceptable.
3, Identify that although many states have laws banning gay marriage, many others have legalized it, and a majority of the public now supports legalization.
