Consider two American women of similar ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds: one who gave birth in the 1950s and the other who gave birth in the 1970s. Which one would be more likely to have breast-fed their baby?
Explain why. Briefly explain breast-feeding trends in the U.S. from the 1980s until today.
What will be an ideal response?
Answer: The mother from the 1970s would be more likely to breast-feed because research was coming out on the many benefits. There were also campaigns to promote it. In the 1940s and 1950s, new formulas were coming on the market, convincing mothers that it was better than breast milk, and some people considered it more modern (even less barbaric) to use formula. Since the 1980s, the percentage of women breast-feeding has increased.
