In response to Protestant actions and visual art, the Council of Trent declared that

a) images of holy figures and saints be maintained in churches to inspire worshippers.
b) images be restricted from worship space so as not to distract from spiritual contemplation.
c) artists could be tried for heresy if images of holy figures or saints did not conform to Church doctrines.
d) bishops of the Church could not be the subject of portraits.
