What are timeouts and how should they be used?

Timeouts involve removing the child from the situation and placing him or her in a safe environment for a period of
time. Timeouts are disciplinary actions which allow children to collect themselves in order to reflect on their
behavior. The typical advice given is that timeouts should last about one minute per year of the child's age.
