Because communication can be used for either honorable or dishonorable objectives, the
authors of the textbook feel that effective communication should go beyond being
understood and accomplishing one?s goals. So, an effective message should also be
ethical. Ethics are the beliefs, values, and moral principles by which we determine what
is right or wrong. Precepts for ethical behavior are communicated through philosophy
and religion as well as professional codes of ethical behavior.
