Being other-oriented means seeing the world from the other person?s viewpoint, or as
the old cliche´ goes, walking a mile in their shoes. The two methods to accomplish this
are social decentering and empathizing. Social decentering is a cognitive activity,
focusing more on the thoughts, values, and background of the other person. What are
their reasons for doing what they do? Steps to doing this include considering your own
past experiences that might be similar, comparing their present behavior to what they
may have done in the past, and understanding how most people might behave in
similar situations. This last step includes understanding cultural or co-cultural norms
for behaviors in a given situation.
The second method is showing empathy, which is experiencing the same feeling as the
other person. Steps for experiencing empathy include stop, look, and listen. (stop
focusing on yourself, look for nonverbal responses, and ask) In addition, imagine how
you would feel, and paraphrase the thoughts and feelings of the other person.
