Give a brief account of the file formats supported by Rhino.

What will be an ideal response?

The following delineation serves to provide some information about commonly used file formats that you may export to or import from.
STEP (.stp, .step) Files: STEP stands for Standard for the Exchange of Product model data.
Direct X (.x) is a set of technologies designed for multimedia elements.
Slice files are StereoLithography Contour (.slc) files. It slices a 3D object to produce 2D contours.
Point files are coordinates of point objects.
GHS stands for General Hydrostatic System. These GHS files concern hydrostatic properties, stability, and other marine-related properties.
XGL files represent 3D objects for the purpose of visualization.
A VDA file is a neutral file format defined by the German Association of Automobile Industries for exchange of computer-aided design data across various systems.
RIB stands for RenderMan Interface Bytestream. RenderMan is a technical specification for the interface between modeling application and rendering application.
CSV files stands for Comma-Separated Value. It is used to exchange data between applications.
Adobe Illustrator (.ai) and Window Metafile (.wmf) Files are viewport dependent. Exporting produces either a 2D Adobe Illustrator file or a 2D Window Metafile from the selected viewport.
STL stands for Stereolithography. NURBS surfaces exported to an STL file will become triangular meshes, and imported STL files are triangular meshes.
VRML stands for Virtual Reality Modeling Language. This is a standard for representing 3D scenes for delivery via the World Wide Web.
POV stands for Persistence of Vision. It is a raytracer that reads a source file describing the scene to be rendered and outputs a rendered image.
Cult 3D is an application that enables you to apply interactivity to the geometry that is constructed in another 3D modeler and exported to .cd format.
UDO stands for User-Defined Objects. It is a description on how objects should look in Moray and tells Moray how to render the wireframe of the object.
LWO stands for LightWave Object, a file format used by LightWave. The file stores information about points, NURBS surfaces, polygon meshes, splines, and surface attributes.
Raw Triangles (.raw) Files is used by Persistent of Vision applications for inputting triangular facet geometry. Naturally, surfaces are exported or imported as meshes.
ACIS is a 3D modeling kernel developed by Spatial Technology. It stores modeling information (wireframe, surface, and solid) in two kinds of file formats: Standard ACIS Text (.sat) and Standard ACIS Binary (.sab).
IGES stands for Initial Graphics Exchange Specifications.
Parasolid is a kernel modeler used by many solid modeling applications.
Exporting Rhino surfaces to 3D Studio file format will convert the NURBS surfaces into polygon meshes. Importing a file back to Rhino will give a set of meshes.
