Describe the Straaten, Engles, Fainkenauer, & Holland (2009) study examining the matching hypothesis. What did they find?
What will be an ideal response?
Answer:
In this study participants were videotaped interacting with strangers and then asked to rate their interest in dating the stranger. Videotapes were coded to determine how attractive the participants were and the extent to which the participants engaged in efforts to make a favorable impression on the other person.
The findings show that men did invest more effort in building a relationship with a stranger that was similar to them in terms of attractiveness than they did if they differed in attractiveness from the participant. This difference was not found for women.
