Discuss the intellectual origins of the Declaration of Independence.

What will be an ideal response?

Created by Thomas Jefferson and unanimously endorsed by the Second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence drew upon the work of John Locke and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Locke argued that all people are born free and equal and enjoy inalienable rights, such as life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Governments exist to protect and preserve these rights. Rousseau expanded this argument by stating that people create their governments, and therefore governments derive their authority from the people.
