Explain the role of nutrition in periodontal diseases
What will be an ideal response?
Nutritional status may be an important conditioning or modifying factor in the progression of the disease and the healing of the periodontal tissues because of impact on the immune response. A number of nutrients, including Omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin C, vitamin E, and zinc have known properties that affect the immune response through their roles in immune cell function and proliferation. Nutritional deficiencies do not cause periodontal disease; however, nutrition impacts the growth, development, and repair of periodontal tissues and is involved in the immune response to infection.
