What are the different components of perspective taking? Provide one example of a paradigm

that has been used to assess this ability.  Why is perspective taking viewed as a vital
component to the development of moral reasoning?

What will be an ideal response?

Perspective taking is the ability to consider the behavior, thinking, or emotions of
another person. For this reason, social, cognitive, and affective perspective taking tasks
have been developed. For example, in one paradigm, children are asked to pick out
items or objects as gifts that might appeal to their parents. Younger children are more
likely to pick out presents that they, themselves, would like. Perspective taking is an
important component to moral reasoning, for example, in order to solve a moral or
social dilemma, it is often necessary to take the perspective of the person in trouble or
distress.
