What is the principle behind the tube shift method of localization?

If the structure or object of interest appears to have moved in the same direction as the horizontal or vertical shift of the tube on a second radiograph made of the region, the object is on the lingual. The tube shift method uses the S.L.O.B. rule ("Same on lingual, opposite on buccal").
