What are some differences between national norms and values? Discuss an example to illustrate.
What will be an ideal response?
Answer: Norms are described as rules and guidelines that allow for certain appropriate behaviors in certain situations. Values are ideas that a group believes to be good, right, and desirable, such as freedom, marriage, collective responsibility, democracy, etc... Values are demonstrated in the economic system of a society, while norms are more concentrated on how people act towards each other in daily situations. Norms are divided into folkways (routine conventions of everyday life) and mores (allow for functioning of society and its social life). An example of a value is how people or countries fight for freedom. An example of a folkway is the correct way to eat with utensils and social etiquette, while an example of a more is being against theft and cannibalism.
