Benjamin Rush admitted mental patients to regular hospitals and wrote the first American textbook on psychiatry; he also recommended and used medical treatments for the mentally ill. Dorothea Dix argued for and oversaw the building of many new psychiatric hospitals. Clifford Beers wrote about his experiences as a mental patient to bring attention to inhumane treatment, and founded the National Committee on Mental Hygiene.
