Briefly describe traffic filtering.

What will be an ideal response?

Traffic filtering restricts the traffic on a network based on specific criteria. There are a variety of different types of filters that can be applied. The three basic types of filtering include address filtering, which restricts access based on the media access control (MAC) address or IP address; data filtering, which limits a packet based on the contents of what that packet is carrying; and protocol filtering, which restricts specific protocols from being transmitted on the network.

Some access points can be configured to filter unwanted protocols from either entering or leaving the wireless network. An access point that receives an inbound or outbound packet that is using a specific protocol will drop the packet and not allow it to enter or leave the network.

Traffic filtering is difficult for an attacker to circumvent. It should be a key element in a scalable and secure WLAN.
