Your team is faced with an ethical dilemma. Opinion is divided in your team as to which solution will suit the situation at hand. Explain the steps your team members will take to arrive at a consensus
Each team member is asked to write down his or her own solution to the dilemma. This forces an individual to examine his or her own ideas. The members meet in groups of three or four to share their individual answers and reach a consensus on a solution.
Each member, by defending his or her own original solution, is forced to test its viability. By listening to other members of the group, one is presented with alternative ways of looking at the problem. All of the solutions reached by the small groups are shared with all participants and the large group is charged with, again, reaching a consensus.
In order to reach a consensus, each solution must be measured against the following questions:
Will the action help more people than it will harm?
How can those harmed recover from the harm?
Is this a win-lose solution?
What values does this solution honor?
What values does this solution dishonor?
Having reached a consensus, the group discusses the solution in relationship to ethical theories.
Ethics of purpose: Is the solution going to move the corporation ahead towards reaching its potential, recognizing all of the stockholders at risk?
Ethics of consequence: Is the solution going to do the most good for the most people and the least harm to the most people?
Ethics of principle: Is the solution one which treats others as an end and not as the means to an end?
