* Mary Whiton Calkins completed her work at Harvard University, yet the university refused to grant her the PhD because it did not grant degrees to women. Nevertheless, she went on to found one of the first psychological laboratories in the United States and was the first woman elected president of the American Psychological Association.
* Christine Ladd-Franklin was not considered suitable for any regular academic position because she was married.
* According to Robert Guthrie (in his book Even the Rat was White), professional training was not an option for African Americans during the late 1800s and early 1900s. In 1920, Francis Sumner became the first African American to receive a PhD in psychology. Sumner established the psychology program at Howard University.
