Starting in 2016, a point of political contention in the United States has been the choice of some professional athletes to kneel before the flag during the National Anthem rather than stand with their hands over their hearts. These athletes are kneeling in silent protest against systematic oppression of people of color. Some people, including President Donald Trump, denigrate this practice as disrespectful to the country. Analyze this conflict in terms of the destructive processes of symbols.
What will be an ideal response?
Those who call for the kneeling athletes to be censured or fired are engaging in reification, the equation of symbols with the things they represent. In this case, people are equating the American flag with the America itself. Thus, by refusing to stand for the anthem, these athletes are disrespecting their country. Reification of symbols prevents people from seeing from these athletes’ perspectives. From the other side, protest is an American tradition, and silent protest is a valid method of expressing concern with a country’s policies and actions.
