Explain the reason for using a thin gauge wire during a lateral coffin (P3) radiograph

Wire is used to facilitate examination for P3 (coffin) rotation. In other words, the veterinarian
is checking to see whether P3 has rotated relative to the hoof wall. The wire provides a
radiodense approximation of the hoof wall and facilitates the comparison. This technique is
typically used for evaluation of laminitic or foundered horses.
