Embedding differs from linking in that the destination file contains a separate copy of the data, so changes to the data in either the source or destination file are not automatically updated in the other location. Embedded data differs from copied and pasted data in that it retains the ability to be modified with the tools from its native application. For example, if you embed an Excel graph in a Project file, you will retain the ability to modify the graph using Excel tools even though the graph is physically stored in the Project file.

Embedding also refers to the ability of a program such as Project to insert data created by shared Office programs. When you insert embedded data directly into the Project file (instead of copying it from an external source), any changes to the data exist only within the Project file. There is no link between the files. You use the Paste Special command to embed data.
