What do we know about depression in women as it relates to their babies?

What will be an ideal response?

Sadness is rare in the first year of life, but infants with depressed mothers show sadness as early as 2 to 3 months of age. How much of the infant's reaction is due to the environment and what role a genetic predisposition may play are questions still being examined. The observation that having a non-depressed mother "look depressed" in 3-minute interaction distresses infants, indicates the environment plays a strong role.
