Discuss the characteristics of various types of plays found in Medieval Europe. What was the goal of drama at this time?

What will be an ideal response?

The Middle Ages saw the emergence of theatrical genres unrelated to the traditions of tragedy and comedy. Liturgical dramas, sung in Latin and performed by clergy and choirboys grew into more complex cycle plays, performed in the vernacular by members of the community. These plays depicted Bible stories and included a mix of religious doctrine and local comic elements. Variations on the cycle plays include passion plays—episodic plays depicting events from the passion of Christ, and saint plays, or miracle plays, which depict events from the lives of saints. Morality plays use allegorical characters to depict moral lessons. The goal of drama at the time was to teach religion and unite the community around the church.
