Suppose a memory manager has narrowed its page-replacement decision to one of two pages. Suppose that one of the pages is shared by several processes, and the other is in use by only a single process. Should the memory manager always replace the nonshared page? Explain.
What will be an ideal response?
Intuition would suggest that replacing the shared page would be detrimental to many
processes, so yes, the system should replace the unshared page. But the decision is more complex
than this. The shared page could be unmodified and not recently used, in which case it is
a relatively desirable page to replace, more so if the unshared page is modified and recently
used.
