Discuss the activities that take place during an action potential, and explain why action potentials are important.

What will be an ideal response?

The brain is made of neuron cells. Neurons use dendrites to take in chemical signals (neurotransmitters). The signals tell the cell to fire or not to fire. If the cell body gets enough "fire" signals, it creates an action potential that leads to an electrical signal down the axon, into the synapse (a gap between neurons), and on to other neurons. Action potentials prove that brain processes are chemical and electrical. Without action potentials, neurons do not fire--and if neurons do not fire, there is probably no cognition in the human brain.
