In a brief essay, define and provide examples of ecotourism. Why is ecotourism becoming more popular? What are the potential drawbacks of this rising popularity? What role does PR play in ecotourism?
What will be an ideal response?
Ecotourism is environmentally responsible travel to natural areas that promote conservation and provide for beneficially active socioeconomic involvement of local peoples. A significant segment of today’s tourists wants more from their travel than the familiar sites featured in glossy brochures and on panoramic websites. With the popularity of ecotourism on the rise, so too are concerns about the impact visitors have on areas that for centuries, were beyond the reach of all but the hardiest adventurers. Now these areas are playing host to thousands of tourists every year. Their trekking through often-fragile ecosystems can result in permanent and irreversible damage. Promoting ecotourism includes the responsibility to not only attract visitors but the right kind of visitors. In other words there’s a need to let the ecotourists know what is expected of them before they even book their trips. Good PR practices will present a thorough and accurate picture of the destination as well as an honest description of the responsibilities of the visitor.
