What is the difference between a LAN and a WAN?

What will be an ideal response?

Local-area network (LAN) computers are connected together (usually by a network cable) serving just the building or campus in which they are located. Wide-area networks (WAN) function similar to a LAN except that they cover larger geographic areas. To do so, the WAN typically uses telecommunication lines to connect a LAN in one area with another LAN in a more distant area.
