When we communicate with others, a variety of things might influence our perceptions and behaviors. One substantial factor affecting our communication encounters is our own cultural background
Explain how one's cultural background influences communication. Provide an example from your own communication experiences that illustrates your answer.
What will be an ideal response?
Culture is a collection of attitudes, beliefs, and values relating to a variety of our lived experiences, including meaning, hierarchy, religion, norms of time, roles, spatial relationships, and even artifacts.
Culture can affect everything from the norms used during communication encounters to perceptions of
what it means to be intelligent. Gage and Berliner suggest that culture affects all of us even though we
may not be consciously aware of it.
Culture, therefore, is ingrained in all of us. It is through the influences of our culture (e.g., our
language system) that we learn to communicate with others. It is also through our culture that we
learn to enact various roles (e.g., gender roles, status roles, etc.).
Those who are inept at understanding the influence of culture on communication may be ethnocentric,
which is a conviction that one's culture is "better" than other cultures.
