What technical challenges faced Michelangelo when painting the Sistine Chapel?

The artist needed to reach the ceiling and thus had to design a new kind of scaffold that moved down the chapel from the entrance to the altar without the supports marring the ceiling itself. Further, his body needed to adjust itself to the constant strain of standing upright and looking back and up to paint.
