In persuasive speaking, it is important to know exactly how to motivate your listeners. Your text explores four ways to motivate listeners to accept your persuasive message. Identify each and offer a brief explanation of how each can be used to motivate listeners

What will be an ideal response?

Answer: The four ways to motivate listeners are cognitive dissonance, listener needs, positive motivation, and negative motivation. Cognitive dissonance presents information contrary to a listener’s attitudes, beliefs, values, or behavior, leading to an internal lack of harmony that the speaker presents a solution to. Listener needs involve appealing to a listener’s physiological (basic), safety, social, self-esteem (desire to think well of ourselves), and self-actualization (realizing one’s highest potential) needs. Positive motivation suggests good things will happen to listeners who heed the speaker’s advice. Negative motivation uses threats, fear appeal, and if-then statements to change someone’s attitude or behavior.
