Discuss religion as a source of human identity and conflict, specifically giving examples of religious conflicts intertwined with ethic and nationalist causes.

What will be an ideal response?

Cannadine argues that religion is the oldest source of human identity and conflict. Whether in Israel, the Arab world, the former Soviet Union, or any number of other places where religious identity is a central part of many individuals’ identity, any threat to one’s religious beliefs is a threat to one’s identity. Oftentimes, religious conflict becomes intertwined with ethnic and nationalist causes, as with Catholics in Northern Ireland and Hindu nationalists in India.
